Every native of Oz is passionate about the celebration of Australia Day. What better way than a fun-filled day of bowling on the beautiful greens of one of Queensland’s premier bowling and pokies clubs? The Maryborough Services Memorial Bowls Club is hosting a big outdoor bash, and inviting everyone to join in the fun and merriment.
Thursday, January 26 is going to be scorcher, so don your best Australian attire, grab your pluggers and a bottle of sun screen, and bring all your mates out to the pokies club at 297 Lennox St for its annual Fun Bowls Day. This will be the Maryborough Service Memorial Bowls Club’s 17th consecutive year hosting this special event in celebration of Australia Day.
Jos Hansen, Secretary of the eastern Queensland bowls club was especially enthusiastic about the upcoming event. “We want everyone to dress up and celebrate Australia Day with us,” said Jos.
“There will be prizes for the best dressed bloke and sheila and we will have damper with syrup and lamingtons for tea,” she said.
All Aussies Welcome!
One of the most exceptional features of Fun Bowls Days is that absolute everyone is welcome, regardless of age or membership status. The club’s members are certainly welcome to call ahead and register themselves or their groups (phone# 4121 4394), but visitors and extra players are also invited to partake in the special celebration.
Hansen called the event a perfect chance to come see what lawn bowling is all about in today’s modern age. “Bowls has changed over the years so this event is a great opportunity to have some fun and see if they like the game.”
For her, the best part of Fun Bowls Day is the camaraderie between everyone who participates in the games and festivities. She said, “meeting new people and other bowlers and getting out and having a bit of fun,” is what it’s all about. “This is a family sport – everyone can bowl – young and older.”
Along with a day of exciting outdoor lawn bowling, the Australia Day celebration will include novelty giveaways, prize drawings and spins.
About the Bowling and Pokies Club
The popular bowling and pokies club is the oldest affiliated club in Queensland, having been a staple of the local community since it was first established in 1950. According to Monument Australia, it is “dedicated in memory of those who served in conflicts in which Australia has been involved.”

The club hosts Ladies’ Bowls every Tuesday and Thursday, and Men’s Bowls every Wednesday and Saturday. Mixed bowling games are held every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, when players can get together for barefoot bowling.
The club offers a wide range of relaxation and entertainment facilities, including pokies, a bar and a kitchen. It’s lauded as a great place for hosting family celebrations, including everything from friendly get-togethers and family reunions, to birthday parties and weddings.
