Thursday, January 26 is going to be scorcher, so don your best Australian attire, grab your pluggers and a bottle of sun screen, and bring all your mates out to the pokies club at 297 Lennox St for its annual Fun Bowls Day. This will be the Maryborough Service Memorial Bowls Club’s 17th consecutive year hosting this special event in celebration of Australia Day.

Jos Hansen, Secretary of the eastern Queensland bowls club was especially enthusiastic about the upcoming event. “We want everyone to dress up and celebrate Australia Day with us,” said Jos.

“There will be prizes for the best dressed bloke and sheila and we will have damper with syrup and lamingtons for tea,” she said.

All Aussies Welcome!

One of the most exceptional features of Fun Bowls Days is that absolute everyone is welcome, regardless of age or membership status. The club’s members are certainly welcome to call ahead and register themselves or their groups (phone# 4121 4394), but visitors and extra players are also invited to partake in the special celebration.

Hansen called the event a perfect chance to come see what lawn bowling is all about in today’s modern age. “Bowls has changed over the years so this event is a great opportunity to have some fun and see if they like the game.”

For her, the best part of Fun Bowls Day is the camaraderie between everyone who participates in the games and festivities. She said, “meeting new people and other bowlers and getting out and having a bit of fun,” is what it’s all about. “This is a family sport – everyone can bowl – young and older.”

Along with a day of exciting outdoor lawn bowling, the Australia Day celebration will include novelty giveaways, prize drawings and spins.
